Happy gardening. I hope your mums are thriving!
There is A LOT of information in our June newsletter. Please let me know if you have any questions.
The next evergreen Chrysanthemum Association meeting will be held on June 8, 2024 at 10 am at Volunteer Park Conservatory in the Susan Priebe Education wing.
Have you ever wondered what a cross between Lili Gallon and Yodogimi might look like?
This month Michael and Travis are going to share their experience trying to germinate and cross breed new Chrysanthemum varietals. Years ago ECA member Ed Hodgson created two Chrysanthemum Varietals (Maudie Hodgson and Ed Hodgson) via this technique. Unfortunately we lost the Maudie varietal but we are still propagating the Ed Hodgson varietal. So bring your questions to the meeting.
Additionally there is a lot of cultural information to cover this month and a little repetitiveness in the notes below. Please carefully read through the cultural notes and note any questions you have .
In reviewing the cultural notes, I feel there are several key points to be noted
1) Now is the time to be pinching your plants – bring your questions to the meeting. Heck, bring your plants in question to the meeting!
2) By the end of June your plants should be in their final pots – in the final potting section there is also good information on soil composition.
3) Once in the final pots, fertilizer, pesticide and disease control regimens should be in place
4) Control plant laterals. After you pinch the growing tip from the plant laterals will begin to show up – control them!!
5) Support the plant. Once the plants get about 6 inches tall the main stalk needs support. The laterals you choose to keep must also be supported. We call this staking.
